You may know that a situation is unlikely to harm you and still feel a strong urge to escape it. A phobia is not a failure of willpower. Understanding what the fear predicts, and how you respond, gives therapy a practical place to begin.
What is a specific phobia?
A specific phobia is an intense fear associated with a particular object or situation, such as an animal, flying or needles. It can bring distress when you face the trigger and worry beforehand. Physical symptoms may include shaking, feeling sick, dizziness or a pounding heart.
Its impact depends on your circumstances. It might affect travel, appointments or time with other people. A phobic response can include panic symptoms, but specific phobias and panic disorder have different patterns and need an individual assessment.
Why avoidance can keep the fear going
Stepping away often brings relief. The difficulty is that avoidance can leave your feared prediction untested, making the next encounter feel just as threatening. You may need to make more arrangements to avoid the trigger, leaving less freedom in everyday life.
How CBT approaches the fear
We explore what you expect to happen and look at beliefs about the situation and your ability to cope. CBT often combines this with graded exposure: approaching the feared object or situation in planned stages, with opportunities to practise and review what you learn.
The steps are agreed together. A starting point for one person may be too much or too little for someone else. You will know the purpose of an exercise and have a say in the pace. Treatment should not involve surprise encounters or being pressured into something you have not agreed to.
Is there something you would like more freedom to do? You can begin a conversation with that goal, even if you do not yet feel ready to approach the trigger.
Finding suitable support
If fear or avoidance is affecting your life, a GP or therapist can help you explore support. The specific trigger, your health and the wider circumstances all matter when deciding what treatment should involve.
