Text-based CBT therapy by SMS or text
Prefer putting your thoughts into writing? You can have a CBT conversation with me through messages during a scheduled appointment, without a video call.

What is CBT by text?
Text-based CBT, also called CBT by text or CBT by SMS, is cognitive behavioural therapy delivered through written messages with a therapist. We still look at links between thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviour. The difference is that we use messages to talk it through rather than speaking over video or the phone.
How does an SMS CBT appointment work?
We arrange a time and have a 50-minute written session. You and I exchange messages during that appointment, exploring what has been difficult and choosing practical CBT steps that fit your situation. It is a live conversation with me, not a chatbot, a self-help course or unlimited messaging between sessions.
Who might prefer written CBT?
Some people are more comfortable writing about difficult feelings, have trouble finding words aloud, or simply do not want video therapy. Writing can give you a moment to organise what you mean. There is no need to have the perfect explanation before getting in touch.
Is text therapy suitable for everyone?
Not always. Whether we use SMS, video or telephone depends on your difficulties, clinical needs and preferences. If a particular intervention needs more direct contact, assessment or supervision, we would discuss a different approach. We would agree the format before starting.
What about privacy and confidentiality?
We would discuss which messaging arrangements are used and how confidentiality, record keeping and data protection work before starting. Ordinary SMS is not automatically end-to-end encrypted, so it is important that you understand the privacy limitations before sharing sensitive information.
These are scheduled therapy appointments, not an immediate-response or crisis messaging service. For urgent concerns, please see urgent support information.
How much does CBT by SMS cost?
£50 for a 50-minute appointment. There is no need to decide now. You can get in touch to ask about availability and whether the format may be appropriate for you.
