CBT for stress & overwhelm

When the demands on you feel greater than your resources.

Making sense of it

What you might notice

Stress is a response to pressure, rather than a diagnosis in itself. Work, caring responsibilities, changes or several smaller demands can build up. You may feel stretched, irritable, tense or unable to switch off, particularly when there seems to be little room for rest.

How CBT can help

We look at both the demands you face and your responses to them. CBT can help with practical problem solving, setting priorities and boundaries, and testing rules such as needing to do everything perfectly. We agree realistic changes that fit your circumstances, including space for recovery and support.

General information, not a diagnosis. Your experience and goals guide our assessment and the plan we agree together.

Understanding the pattern

How the cycle can keep going

This example shows one way the pattern can be maintained. Your own triggers and responses may look different.

Example cycle for stress and overwhelm, linking a trigger, its meaning, feelings, coping responses and what keeps the pattern going. A text version follows.
CBT can support realistic priorities, boundaries and recovery time, alongside addressing the pressures you face.

Read the cycle step by step
  1. Trigger: Several demands arrive at the same time
  2. Meaning: I must manage everything. I can’t let anyone down.
  3. Feelings and body: Pressure, tension and feeling overwhelmed.
  4. Response: Work longer, skip breaks and find it hard to say no.
  5. What keeps it going: Less recovery; everyday demands feel even harder.

The short-term response can make the pattern more likely to repeat. This is an illustration, not a diagnosis or an individual formulation.
